Sliema local council to manage new carpark at Qui-Si-Sana
James Debono Government is proposing an underground car park in Qui-Si-Sana, to be managed entirely by the Sliema local council.
The new car park will accommodate 93 cars to make up for the loss of 80 parking spaces due to the extension of the recreational area on part of the existing car park.
“By developing the carpark we will simply be increasing recreational space without losing the existing parking spaces,” a spokesperson for the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs told MaltaToday.
A planning application has already been presented for this aim following consultation with the council. The car park, sited in the vicinity of the approved roundabout opposite Fort Cambridge, will have three levels, two of which will be underground accessed through an existing ramp leading to the Tigné beach concessions.
Controversial plans to construct a much larger underground car park accompanied by commercial development, a major cause of disgruntlement among Sliema voters in the area, were dropped last year when the resources ministry applied to MEPA to upgrade the existing garden and play area in Tigné, most of which is presently utilised as a car park.
Another application submitted by the ministry earmarks the long neglected Qui-Si-Sana gardens into a recreational park, set to contain water features and various play areas for children, surrounded by turf.
