Maltese TV at a crossroads?

‘Salib it-Toroq’ pips ‘Xarabank’ to top spot

TVM’s real life drama ‘Salib it-Toroq’ gained the highest number of audiences, according to the October-December broadcasting survey conducted by the Broadcasting Authority.
With viewership peaking at 20.61%, Salib it-Toroq managed to surpass Xarabank, which has for the past years always maintained the highest rating.
According to this survey, Xarabank’s highest peak was at 9pm with 20.173%, dipping to 12.09% by 10.30 pm and to 2.693 per cent by 11pm.
“This is great news,” veteran director Charles Stroud, of 26th Frame, said when contacted by MaltaToday. “Salib it-Toroq has been a continuous Calvary to produce both from the administrative side and the artistic angle.”
Stroud outlined the basic challenges faced by the production team.
“Born from Fredrick Zammit’s pen (just out of the Santa Monika success), the series took a long time to kick off due to the delay in finalizing negotiations. And starting off from the meagre budgets given, it was no mean task to produce the cast required, locations for four families, their streets, workplace and surroundings.”
The 26th Frame director said that a large studio-cum-warehouse was acquired and nicknamed the Workshop by the performers themselves. This has developed into a second home for the whole cast. Working virtually everyday, their full orchestration and dedication has now been awarded their biggest satisfaction in becoming part of the most viewed programme on local television stations.
“Programmes which have been around for many more years have been gracefully surpassed, and with the deepest respect, it is time that we realize that real life stories portrayed by a group of very talented performers is what the Maltese viewing audience want,” said Salib it-Toroq’s TV Director.
The Broadcasting Authority survey confirmed TVM as the most followed TV station.
According the BA, TVM had an average of 28.7 % of viewership, followed by Other TV stations at 17 % and One TV at 15.6%. Net TV placed fifth at 5.7%
Bay Radio was the most followed radio station attaining a high 26.6% of all listeners. Super One Radio gained the second overall average of 11.9% while Calypso Radio placed third with 11.1%.
Radju Parliament was the least followed, with a daily average audience of 0.1%
