PL to present motion for ‘coalition of moderates, progressives’

The Labour Party is aspiring to become “the political expression of a coalition of all those who harbour moderate and progressive sentiments, ideas and aspiration.”
A motion, which will be presented by the party’s executive in the forthcoming general conference, recognises that a number of “moderates, progressives and political liberals are not yet prepared to adhere to the Labour Party because of their roots, experiences and cultural orientation.”
It also calls on the party to understand that a growing section of the population is losing its trust in the political system and is more willing to vote for “marginal parties” or not vote at all.
In a bid to open up to these people the motion proposes the creation of a e new movement open to all those who hold dear the 44 principles mentioned in the motion.
Pandering to economic liberals, the motion refers to private enterprise as “the principle engine of the Maltese economy”, and calls for responsible tax cuts as an incentive for growth. Concurrently the motion renews the party’s traditional commitment for free healthcare, the abolition of poverty and improved public and social services.
In what appears as a vague hint to secular values, the motion states that the state should not interfere in the private life of individuals and calls for the respect for diversity of opinions, minorities and different orientations. It also states that the movement is open to all those who value civil rights and fundamental rights.
No direct reference is made to the introduction of divorce and gay rights and the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers.
While considering creativity and artistic freedom as necessary for cultural development, it makes no specific reference to the issue of censorship.
A commitment for meritocracy, good governance and the struggle against corruption also feature in the party’s appeal to non-traditional voters.
