Harry Vassallo’s article (Never say never – MaltaToday, Wednesday 6 January) purports to be a comment on a piece of mine (Apocalypse Now! - MaltaToday, Sunday 3 January).
Comments are free, of course; but Dr Vassallo’s comments were based on an imaginary message that does not ensue in any way from my contribution. This imaginary message is so far away from what I wrote that Vassallo’s interpretation is tantamount to a gross misrepresentation of my opinion.
Saying that as long as people exist, corruption will exist is simply repeating a fact of life. My point, of course, was that there are certain facts of life that will remain unchanged, not that corruption should be condoned in any way.
To conclude that my pointing out something that should be obvious is tantamount ‘to openly and brazenly shrug off any failure because the corrupt will always be among us’ or to ‘a blank cheque to everyone scheming and sleazy, a blanket absolution in advance’ is a piece of incredible warped reasoning on the part of Vassallo.
Nothing in my opinion piece implies such conclusions in any way.
