James Debono A MaltaToday survey conducted in January 2006 revealed a deep rift in opinions between young people and their elders on the closing times of clubs and other entertainment establishments.
While a majority of under 34 year olds favoured no-time limits on the closing times of entertainment places, a scathing 92% of over 55 year olds and 57.3% of those aged between 35 and 54 years of age opposed such a move.
People who frequent clubs and other entertainment establishments were the most likely to support a liberalization of closing times. In fact among this category 61% opposed time restrictions.
Yet overall, two thirds of the Maltese favour the imposition of time limits on opening times of entertainment establishments.
The survey also showed that an absolute majority of the Maltese would like open bars banned. Even young people tend to oppose ‘open bar’ parties, where one can drink as much as one likes after paying an initial entry fee.
