A federation of 11 unions has written to the Malta Resources Authority, demanding a meeting to discuss the increase in the price of energy.
The MRA is reviewing a request by Enemalta to increase prices, expected for January 2010.
In the letter, the Ghaqda Unions Maltin (GhUM) asked the MRA several questions, namely: whether its role as regulator was to verify any inefficiencies and bad practice in Enemalta’s operations; if the tariffs will be based on a hedging system; if the prices consumers will pay will be based on the price of oil being sold in the market; if the €60 million that Enemalta will be spending on new electricity meters will be reflected on the new tariffs; if the one-time benefits for households announced by the government in last week’s Budget were decided after consultation with the MRA; and if a social impact assessment has been carried out on the proposed tariffs.
The GhUM are composed of the Malta Union of Teachers, the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses, the University of Malta Academic Staff Association, the Airline Pilots Association, the General Workers Union, the Union of Cabin Crew, the Central Bank Employees Union, the Union of Planning Authority Professionals, the Union of Public Architects and Engineers, the MEPA Union of Technical and Clerical Workers, and the Association of Airline Engineers.
