Church environment commission rushes to MEPA auditor’s defence

The Church’s environment commission has joined the chorus of support for the MEPA audit officer, saying the criticism levelled at Joe Falzon was “out of place”.
The commission said the audit officer’s findings into the Ta’ Xerri application in Qala should not be turned into a political football, especially after the recent years’ experience had lent credence to the auditor’s findings in his reports on planning.
“The commission understands that MEPA’s work is delicate, but it is for this reason that it must be guided by a sense of public conscience when carrying out its duties,” the commission said.
The commission said the auditor was carrying out his role responsibly, and that it would be a mistake to criticise his office simply because MEPA was in disagreement with his findings. “We risk undermining the moral strength of this office and also promote a culture of omertà that does not allow the truth to be heard.”
The commission however also deplored what it said were “attempts for political advantage” over the auditor’s comments, referring to Labour statements on Falzon’s mulling of resignation. “That someone tries throwing in partisan politics in the stew, is an irresponsible act.”
The commission added that the audit officer, as “MEPA’s conscience” should expect criticism from all sides, because of the implications of MEPA’s decisions.
