Climate change exhibition vandalised

A Friends of the Earth exhibition with the theme ‘The Climate is changing; Are you?’, on display on the parapet of the Birkirkara Civic Centre, was vandalised last Saturday.
“It was an unbelievable sight I saw on Sunday morning. I felt very sad when I saw the damage done to the exhibition. It’s taken many months and many hours to set it up and a lot of positive feedback was received regarding the impact of the photos on societal conscience,” FOE exhibition coordinator Rebecca Borg said.
The physical damage to the exhibition totals at €1,065.02. FoE Malta has since filed a report at the Birkirkara police station.
The panels of the exhibition were discovered strewn on the ground, some broken, some scratched, others missing. Chewing gum was also affixed around the clips of one of the stands.
The FoE Malta International photographic exhibition titled ‘The climate is changing... are you?’ was on displayed in the Birkirkara Civic Centre between Monday 2 November to Sunday 8 November.
The exhibition was still intact on Friday 6 November, when FoE Malta volunteers and members of the public had come to the Birkirkara Civic Centre for the closing event of the project – a climate forum.
The exhibition was funded with support from the European Commission – Youth in Action programmes under the heading 1.2 Youth Initiatives.
The exhibition had previously spent two week at Independence garden, Sliema; two weeks at University; two weeks at the Birgu Waterfront; and a weekend in Santa Venera; before moving it to the final location at the Birkirkara Civic Centre.
“Apart from weather damages in Birgu and one incident with a scribble on a photo at University, the exhibition remained in good condition”.
However, one of the photos was stolen on Thursday night from outside the Civic Centre, before this act of vandalism took place. The second prized photograph was shot by Denise Scicluna, MaltaToday’s photographer.
The civic centre is protected by a security camera on the top floor. However FOE has been told by the police that this camera only covers the street in front of the Civic Centre – Triq Tumas Fenech where the Wed and Fri market (is-suq) is held – and that the camera may or may not work.
The exhibition is part of Friends of the Earth’s local efforts leading up to Copenhagen conference in December where world’s leaders will discuss how to replace the soon-to-expire Kyoto protocol.
The FOE climate change campaign started two years ago, in Valletta, when Friends of the Earth launched its ‘Big Ask’ campaign.
“The main aim of this campaign was to increasingly push for better policies and legal frameworks addressing Malta’s role in the face of global climate change, while increasing public awareness regarding the issue,” Borg told MaltaToday.
