Distribution of medicines should not be privatized

Zminijietna – Voice of the Left is highly concerned with Government’s proposal to reform the ‘pharmaceutical of your own choice’ scheme by obliging people to buy medicines and subsequently be reimbursed by Government.
Zminijietna believes that Government’s plan seems tailored only towards the interests of the importers of medicine for cash flow purposes, as they will be paid immediately by consumers, whilst Government will only refund consumers after this.
This reform will put more pressure on those most vulnerable such as pensioners, low and middle income earners and persons who require expensive medicines.
Yet again, this is an example of how the Nationalist Government is increasingly adopting neo-liberal policies which favour big business interests at the expense of vulnerable groups and classes.
If Government does not want to retain the current system, it should consider importing medicines itself for distributing for public health purposes.
