The 10 safety commandments

Recommendations by the Malta Maritime Authority for cruising and water skiing

1. All vessels must have a valid operational Certificate of Registy and shall be marked in a conspicuous manner as required by law.

2. A nautical licence is required for:
• Driving a vessel having an engine or engines with a combined power of 100 HP or more; or
• For towing any person for the purpose of water skiing.

3. An insurance cover is required for the driver or drivers of any mechanically driven vessel having an engine or engines with a combined power of 10 HP or more.

4. All vessels shall not proceed at a speed in excess of 10 knots:
• inside any harbour;
• in any place within 300 metres of the foreshore of a sandy beach; or
• In any place within 200 metres of any other part of the foreshore.

5. No water skiing is permitted:
• Within 300 metres of the foreshore of a sandy beach;
• Within 200 metres of any other part of the foreshore;
• In any shipping lane and approach to a harbour; or
• Within any harbour.

6. Skiers must take off:
• At a distance of not less than 300 metres of the foreshore of a sandy beach;
• At a distance of not less than 200 metres of any other part of the foreshore;
• Clear of any boat;
• Clear of any shipping lane and/or approach to a harbour;
• Outside any harbour;
• Clear of any slipway;
• Clear of any quay and landing; or
• Clear of any berth or mooring.

7. Apart from the driver, an observer being 18 years or over must be on board, keeping constant watch on the skier.

8. All moorings shall have a mooring permit issued by the Authority.

9. The official registration number must be shown on the marker buoys of every mooring in a legible manner.
10. No mechanically-driven vessel can be driven in a dangerous or reckless manner or under the influence of alcohol.
