Moviment Graffitti would like to expresss its preliminary views regarding Renzo Piano's plans for Valletta’s City Gate.
Moviment Graffitti believes that as presented, the regeneration project is unsustainable and will cost Maltese citizens and tax payers a lot of money in time of harsh economical crisis. Hence the project will increase government debt without generating any revenue in return. Moviment Grafitti believes that it is contractors and developers rather than the general public who will ultimately benefit from this project.
Moreover, Moviment Graffitti cannot understand why the Government is still insensitive and inconsiderate to the idea of open spaces. The history of the PN government is fraught with the decrease of open spaces, and the Renzo Piano plans will for another time, destroy one of the last open spaces in Valletta which is used communaly by the public. Open spaces should be preserved because they are public spaces which allow equal accessibility. Therefore we believe that Freedom Square should be embellished but left as open space.
Furthermore, the project does not seem to reflect the wishes of the people, who have not expressed the need for the building of a new House of Parliament.
Moviment Graffitti believes that it would be more sustainable if instead of engaging in the development of such a mega project, priority attention is directed to consolidate existing infrastructure, particularly to address the pathetic state of our public roads.
