Iklin council ‘took various measures’ to reduce traffic

The Iklin local council said it had taken various measures to calm down traffic in Geronimo Abos Street, the scene of Monday’s accident where a truck crashed into a confectionery.
Mayor Anthony Dalli said the council had introduced a parking scheme and the necessary traffic signs in accordance with ADT standards and after consulting also with the Police Traffic Division. The council also has recently installed a CCTV camera in the same place because of the haphazard parking in the same area to avoid further accidents.
“It is worth mentioning that some months ago a warden was manhandled by an employee of Maypole Confectionery whilst wardens were carrying out their duty,” Dalli said.
“The council introduced a ban on heavy vehicles of a certain tonnage on Triq il-Wied, Triq Geronimo Abos and Triq San Mikiel and the relative traffic signs were put up. In the same roads there are traffic signs indicating the speed limit and these roads are patrolled frequently during the day,” Dalli said.
The council has also applied to the ADT to install ‘sleeping-policeman’ in Triq il-Wied and Triq San Mikiel. However these were not approved.
In 2004 the council also applied for a mobile speed camera in Triq Geronimo Abos but this was not approved by the authorities.
And a request in 2008 for a ‘zebra crossing’ in Triq Geronimo Abos was not acknowledged.
“This goes to show that the Local Council had done everything possible to find a solution to these problems. And more than that was aware of these problems and that is why it took certain measures to eliminate them,” Dalli said.
He said the council wished the persons injured in this unfortunate incident a speedy recovery.
