Sliema residential parking scheme to go ahead

Sliema’s local council has announced that its residential parking scheme will be set in force once the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) approves all its proposed streets.
It said both ADT and the Chamber of SMEs (GRTU) had approved the scheme after considering residents’ requirements for parking and engaging professionals to supply technical studies, and a consultation process.
Sliema residents will be able to park in all roads with no time restrictions, but non-residents will have unrestricted parking in 50% of Sliema roads.
A maximum 120 minutes will apply on the remaining 50% between 8am and 9pm, from Monday to Sunday.
The Strand area already has time limitations according to the signage in the area.
The council said that until such approval by the ADT, it will address any teething problems that may arise.
More than 300 roads in 19 towns and villages will be reserved parking zones for residents, after ADT approval. News of the restricted zones brought concern from business owners who feel they may be affected by the lack of parking space for outside visitors.
There will be different coloured parking bays to distinguish between residents and visitors. Those driving company cars, but are registered as Sliema residents, will be given a special parking sticker to affix to their windscreen.
Other towns featured in the legal notice, published last week, include Vittoriosa, Victoria, Fontana, Rabat, Balzan, Floriana, Ħamrun, Iklin, Mellieħa, Mosta, Msida, Naxxar, St Julian’s, San Ġwann, St Paul’s Bay, Pietà, Swieqi and Ta’ Xbiex.
