Shark spotted near Comino

The police yesterday said the Armed Forces of Malta had spotted a shark within the Comino island environs.
The report followed an earlier sighting of two ‘large fish’ spotted near Zonqor Point.
The police said the general public was advised to exercise caution in this case.
Recently, three sharks caught by Maltese fishermen close to the island were wrongly described as great whites.
Inspectors from the Malta Environment and Planning Authority investigated claims about the catch and found they were short-fin makos.
Malta is one of the few countries which protects great white sharks. The last great white catch recorded in Malta was the much-publicised female that was fished in 1987 by Alfredo Cutajar.
But sharks rarely swim into Maltese waters and, when they did, they generally did not approach the shore.
