Caravan site should replace illegal boathouses

Zminijietna Voice of the Left, which is an official member of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority's nature group of NGOs, has submitted its objection to Mepa against the proposed development of a caravan site at Il-Prajjiet in Mellieha, opposite Popeye Village.
The site is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and is protected by the Habitats Directive. It also includes a garigue and agricultural land, apart from being an open space.
Zminijietna believes that following public consultation, Government should identify alternative sites for a caravan site, such as sites which are already occupied illegally, for example by boathouses. In this regard, Zminijietna absolutely disagrees that Government sanction illegal development, such as with boathouse owners in Armier, through behind-the-scenes meetings for electoral purposes.
Caravan sites should replace illegal boathouses, as Malta cannot keep losing more open spaces.
