Police yesterday arraigned a Romanian national, 25, who resides in Germany, over the importation of cocaine and heroin, and drug conspiracy.
Gabriel Alin Fister, who pleaded not guilty, was denied bail and sent to Corradino Correctional Facility.
The man was apprehended on 30 March at Malta International Airport with a consignment of 900 grammes of cocaine and one kilo of heroin.
The drug bust came after the Police drug squad was tipped about the imminent arrival of the courier from Amsterdam.
The two large packets containing drugs were found hidden in a false bottom inside the courier’s suitcase. Duty magistrate Miriam Hayman ordered an inquiry into the drug find.
The arrests led to other men being apprehended, namely two Ivory Coast nationals, 27 and 30, residing in Zabbar and Qawra. In Qawra, the Police found more drugs, with some 80 grammes of heroin retrieved as well as other drug paraphernalia.
Duty magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera is leading the inquiry.
