The Health Ministry said the St Luke’s Hospital chimney was currently smoking due to mechanical problems with the burners inside the boilers, with the effect that the mixture was being compromised.
The hospital has already implemented some repairs but these did not solve the intermittent smoking problems. Engineers have been asked to look into the problem and correct the problem as speedily as possible.
St Luke’s management said it had taken measures for the installation of a new system of boilers to replace the current steam boilers which have been in constant operation since St Luke’s Hospital was opened. The boilers were re-dimensioned for the Karen Grech Hospital operation and will be installed and operational by year-end. The incinerator was dismantled in the first week of December 2007 and has been out of operation since then.
The hospital said that all efforts were being taken to minimise the effects whilst still providing the vital hot water to patients.
