Unions coalition condemns minister’s ‘attack’ on GWU

The coalition of 11 unions forming the major opposition to the new energy tariffs yesterday expressed condemnation of minister Austin Gatt over “an attack” on the General Workers Union.
The coalition comprises the GWU, nurses, pilots, university staff, teachers, cabin crew, and MEPA employees amongst other unions.
“The unions consider this attack to be directed towards them as well. We are demanding that the regulator (MRA) considers the proposed tariffs. In a meeting it had with the MRA, the unions proposed that the tariffs are revised retrospectively to October 2008, that the reduction will be bigger than that previously proposed due to the reductions in the cost of oil, and that the eco-reduction bands are adjusted to include one and two-person families.”
The unions said they could not help noticing the “minister’s antics” in announcing the tariffs without even waiting for the MRA’s approval.
