The Archbishop’s Curia has announced it will be stopping plans to forward its staff’s personal details to Melita following a story on MaltaToday in which the Data Protection Commission warned that the practice would be illegal.
A spokesperson said the Curia was taking the Data Protection Commissioner’s advice against forwarding personal details without the written consent of staff.
The Curia had invited staff to take advantage of favourable rates by the church’s official telecommunications supplier, while informing them their details were being forwarded to the company, unless they stated otherwise. Staff members were informed to write back only in case they objected to the transfer of their data.
Yet the Data Protection Commission said the procedure had to work the other way round: “Where an employer intends to use or even disclose personal information of staff members for purposes other than the employment relationship, this may only occur with the unambiguous consent of the employee.”
