Traffickers choosing Malta over Italy – Maroni

The Italian home affairs minister Roberto Maroni has told a security conference in Belgrade that human traffickers are taking immigrants to Malta since his government started keeping immigrants on the island of Lampedusa instead of taking them to Italian mainland.
“The migrants that arrived in the recent days in Lampedusa originate from scenarios of war, for example from Somalia: they will ask for asylum and we will grant t to them.”
Maroni said that keeping immigrants on the island of Lampedusa after landing there, instead of transporting them to detention centres in Italy, was sending a message to traffickers.
