Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi approached PN stalwart Dr Frank Portelli last Wednesday, asking him to stand as European Parliamentary candidate in the EP elections in June.
MaltaToday is informed that Portelli accepted the PM’s offer but the candidature still needs to be accepted by the PN executive to be held next Thursday.
Portelli’s candidature will go a long way in boosting the resolute Nationalist middle class who regard Portelli as one of them.
The PN is concerned that the next EP elections will be a testing ground for the protest vote against the party and Portelli’s candidature is aimed at diminishing that shock. Frank Portelli is considered a market liberal in the party. A former parliamentarian and president of the party, he is also the owner of St Philip’s Hospital.
