Work is under way inside the Labour Party (PL) to identify a team of lawyers to file a class action against the Maltese government to refund the VAT on registration tax paid on cars since 2004.
Last Saturday the PL announced the party will file a collective case in court in the name of all the people who paid an “illegal” portion of VAT on registration tax. The party said that later on this week it will announce the details of how affected citizens could register their case with the PL.
An individual writ was filed yesterday by a motorist claiming his VAT refund, just a week after European Taxation Commissioner Laszlo Kovacs said Maltese nationals were entitled to take the matter up in the Maltese law courts.
Labour sources said that in the past two days, the party headquarters were inundated with phone calls from car owners who wanted to immediately enrol for the case.
Another initiative was announced Saturday afternoon by Alternattiva Demokratika who invited affected parties to send their details to the party who will also be filing a case in court against the government.
An online Facebook group has also been growing rapidly with more than 528 members. The group says it wants a full refund of the VAT charged on the registration tax of vehicles bought after the 1st of May 2004.
