AD deplores ‘democratic deficit’ over EP sixth seat
Alternattiva Demokratika accused the Maltese parliament of not yet deliberating on the voting method of Malta’s possible sixth seat in the European Parliament.
Stephen Cachia, Alternattiva Demokratika deputy chairperson and spokesperson on democracy, stated: “It is unacceptable that less than 13 weeks from the elections, the Maltese Parliament has not yet clearly specified the method of election of the sixth seat, possibly available next October after the Irish referendum, so that the Maltese electorate will clearly know the value of their vote on voting day on 6th June.”
Alternattiva Demokratika reiterated that the sixth MEP should be elected on the basis of the same system as that electing the first five MEPs, according to the single transferable vote system.
“It is of utmost importance that this is confirmed prior to the election date and that it is the Maltese and Gozitan people who will decide the sixth MEP elected, and nobody else. In order to best reflect the people’s will, Alternattiva Demokratika believes that on 6th June the quota for election should be based on six candidates,” Cachia said.
