AD supports early voting for Small Nations athletes
Alternattiva Demokratika is asking the electoral commission to make special arrangements to give the possibility to Maltese athletes to exercise their right to vote a week or so before the European Parliament elections of 6 June, before they leave the country for the Small Nations Games.
AD said it was supporting the appeal made by Malta Olympic Committee president Judge Lino Farrugia Sacco and secretary-general Joseph Cassar.
Between the 1 and 6 June this year, 120 Maltese athletes and officials will be participating in the Small Nations’ Games.
AD chairperson Arnold Cassola said that in 2003, during the EU referendum, there were problems for the Malta waterpolo team to vote since it was competing in European championships.
“Apart from the athletes’ right to vote, we simply cannot afford to have them abandoning international sports competitions in order to vote. This would cause great harm to the image and reputation of our country. A country which values democracy should strive to make exercising the right to vote as easy as possible for its citizens.”
