The Ramblers’ Association of Malta (RAM) yesterday gave credit where it was due, praising what it said was a “notable positive change in attitude” of the government with respect to direct action to improve the Maltese countryside.
The RAM praised parliamentary secretary Jason Azzopardi for taking the bull by the horns to resolve notorious black spots, such as those of Fomm ir-Rih, the caravan site in Bahar ic-Cahaq, Torri l-Abjad in Armier and others.
They said parliamentary secretary Chris Said had also taken action in cleaning up the countryside from old vehicles, domestic machinery and rusty drums dumped in open spaces.
They said Said had proved to be receptive to ideas that RAM proposed to him. “The reform of the local councils is a supreme example. He has involved local councils in the clean-up and the maintenance of the green environs within their boundaries.
“RAM is equally pleased that the two young parliamentary secretaries resorted to direct action, without the blowing of trumpets, knowing full well that fairness, justice and popular support are on their side.”
The association also praised the ministry for resources and rural affairs for lowering high rubble walls, after complaints that countryside paths had been turned into corridors with high rubble walls, obstructing scenic views.
“The real camouflage behind the height of such walls was always questionable and has often been found to conceal activities carried out clandestinely and without permit. Very often such actions reduced good arable or garigue areas into disturbed land. Many a junkyard has seen its origins behind such walls.
“While RAM appeals to Local Councils and all citizens to collaborate fully in order to rid their environs from eyesores, it likewise entreats all MPs and especially Cabinet Ministers to give wholehearted support to these initiatives with the intention of improving conditions in the countryside, where civility has gone lost and lawlessness reigns supreme.”
