PBS newsroom bypasses MaltaToday over tuna controversy

The Public Broadcasting Services newsroom decided to ignore MaltaToday in its edition on the controversial issue on tuna farming, featured in its news programme Dissett, on Tuesday last week.
Staff at The Times were instead contacted to form part of the panel that discussed the allegations and accusations over Malta’s tuna farming statistics and declarations to the European Commission and tuna watchdog ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas).
But MaltaToday is informed the newsroom at The Times refused the invitation, instead directing the PBS newsroom to this newspaper, which had first broke the news on discrepancies between Maltese export figures to Japan, and Japan’s import statistics.
The claims have been advanced by Greenpeace International and the WWF to ICCAT and the European Commission.
The PBS newsroom, whose Head of News is former Times journalist Natalino Fenech, did not follow up the offer to include MaltaToday in the panel, effectively boycotting the newspaper that was crucial in bringing the tuna controversy to the fore.
