In lashing out at ‘Slimizi’ (30 November) Edwin Vassallo exposes his recurrent fixation of turning knight errant in the service of contractors.
It is totally absurd of him to ask whether Sliema people want peace and quiet, and to state that it is their fault that Sliema was ruined, because they sold their property for gain. So is he taking the Sliema local council to task for issuing the bye-law? This has been a constant windmill at which he has been tilting since the beginning of the Nationalist-led local council.
What irritates Sliema residents is that, whereas it is in the economic and general interest of each and every one of us lesser mortals to rush through any work being carried out on our behalf, and for which we have to obtain permits, contractors have been known to block main streets and seriously disrupt traffic for a day and more, without seeking any permit from, or advising, our council. Is Vassallo unable to accept this? There have been many recorded cases of damage to streets, pavements and third party property which have not been righted after a number of years.
We have also had the eyesore and inconvenience of huge cranes sitting here for years while they were only used sporadically. At €2.33 per day, a contractor would be virtually free to leave a crane for as long as it is convenient for him, and cock a snook at neighbouring residents.
I congratulate our council for having had the tenacity to persist in this matter along the years. For this they have the backing and gratitude of all local residents.
I would have thought that, judging by what was reported lately, Mr Vassallo might have been more profitably employed spending his time to recoup work lost while he was a cabinet member, than indulging in empty talk.
