Animals don’t have votes

Your article “Cruel End” of 27 July made most upsetting reading though it was most revealing in its own light, and as such most useful. How people can be so callous to the suffering of dumb beasts is amazing though in this case I am putting the blame on the system rather than on the perpetrators of these barbaric acts, the abattoir being the responsibility and being run by the government. Today we belong to the EU and surely one would expect such places to be managed in a much more humane manner than depicted in your feature. Hence I hope that the authorities concerned would put a stop to such cruel practices and a statement to that effect will be shortly forthcoming. One should remember that animals do not have votes but we citizens and animal lovers certainly have.

Saviour Pisani,
Hamrun
