Aaron Farrugia, 28, and Alex Sciberras, 26, yesterday launched their bids for the posts of education secretary and vice-president respectively for the Labour Party’s administrative committee.
Farrugia, an economist and deputy mayor of Ta’ Xbiex, said the party needed to renew its social democratic beliefs, saying he had the right academic, professional and political qualities to serve as education secretary. He said Labour had to convince the electorate it had a strong team “that can guarantee peace of mind, that it is stable, trusted and above everything else, an alternative government.”
The post is currently occupied by Wenzu Mintoff, who is contesting the post of party president in the upcoming elections for a new party administration.
Sciberras, a lawyer, will be contesting the post currently occupied by Louis Gatt. He said he would introduce the necessary reforms and structures for new Labour policies that are “studied, and progressive”.
“I am interested in no other role than that of vice-president, and I feel I have the necessary experience to deliver a meaningful contribution to this role,” Sciberras said.
Sciberras is presently mayor of Msida.
