Muscat questions case for golf courses

Charlot Zahra

Labour leadership contender Joseph Muscat yesterday called for a total re-think about the building of new golf courses in Malta and Gozo in view of the country’s limited land resources.
Asked point blank about his opinion about the proposed golf courses at Ta’ Cenc and Ramla l-Hamra by a Nature Trust representative during a consultation meeting with NGOs at the Hilton yesterday morning, Muscat said: “Ten years ago, when the proposal of a new golf course was originally made, I agreed with it because at that time, the market for golf courses was booming.
“However, now the market conditions have become much more difficult. Therefore what made economic sense ten years ago might not make economic sense today.
“We must re-think whether it still makes sense today to have a new golf course in Malta and Gozo, especially in view of the scarce land available in this country.
Muscat said that the Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) should treat with more seriousness all major projects which involve the development of substantial parcels of land in Malta.
