NEWS | Wednesday, 7 May 2008 Marlene risks it all for George Abela Labour MP Marlene Pullicino revealed yesterday on Reporter that her outspoken support for George Abela may cost her dearly if Abela is not elected party leader on 5 June.
“I am aware (that the MLP might see me in a different light) and a lot of people who voted for me and want me to succeed in the party, tried to warn me with regard to this issue. However, I believe if I took a decision and am convinced about it, then I have to take action when the time is right.” Pullicino said she knows of five other deputies who are support Abela, and believes he will still manage to attract the delegates’ votes even if the electoral college is not opened t party members. The dentist, hailing from a staunch Labourite family, said her gateway to university was made possible by Mintoff’s student worker schemes. “However, I was shocked in 1981 when the Labour party lost the majority and kept governing the country. Although we were die-hard Labourites, we still felt this was not the thing to do in a democratic country. Then there was the period of the schools’ issue and violence. So when the time came for me to vote for the first time, I felt it was time to change. In fact in 1987 I voted PN.” Tonight Reporter will discuss the current economic situation in Malta with Prof. Edward Scicluna on TVM at 7.40pm. Any comments? |
