NEWS | Wednesday, 09 April 2008 Children’s Commissioner in talks over Lourdes Home abuse Franica Pulis Children’s Commissioner Carmen Zammit is in talks with experts on the issue of the Lourdes Home abuse, which recently culminated in an official apology by Gozo bishop Mario Grech.
In tonight’s Reporter, broadcast on TVM at 7:40pm, Zammit will tell presenter Saviour Balzan that she has had discussions with a number of experts on how to deal with the Lourdes Home abuse, and to explore how such incidents may be prevented in future. During the programme, Zammit explained that most fundamental children’s rights are already in place and being executed; however, some of these rights still need to be further elaborated, especially insofar as court proceedings are concerned. “Some rights still need to be refined, especially regarding those children who come into contact with the law courts. In cases such as separation, where children need to be heard more, they should have a more welcoming environment and they must be respected more. Even in the cases where children appear in front of the Juvenile Court, they should have the right to be listened to and see the background they come from so that they are given the necessary therapy,” the Commissioner said. The issues which worry Zammit most are the tension that has been created in the education sector, and the lack of attention given to children coming from problematic backgrounds, who are not given enough resources to continue living with their families and who are not given an education according to their skills.
