Harsh bill proposes hypothec on property for VAT defaulters

A bill presented in parliament proposes to extend the powers of the VAT commissioner allowing him to register a hypothec on immovable property of whoever fails to pay outstanding VAT owed to the government. If passed, the bill would add considerable pressure on VAT defaulters who could number in the hundreds.
