Charlot Zahra In a rare statement to the media through publicist Godfrey Grima, the Polidano Group, owned by construction magnate Charles Polidano, yesterday denied having any knowledge of plans by Enemalta to dump construction waste material from the extension of the power station at its quarry in Siggiewi.
The claim Enemalta had decided to use the Polidano Group landfill at Siggiewi was made by Enemalta during the controversial hearing by MEPA last Friday, which gave Enemalta the necessary building permits for the new 144MW extension of the Delimara Power Station.
When asked by a MEPA board director whether Enemalta had in mind other sites for dumping waste construction material, an Enemalta official said the corporation was suggesting dumping will take place at the Polidano quarry.
When pressed the official said he was referring to the quarry close to Hagar Qim.
“The Group has not been approached by Enemalta to use its landfill at Siggiewi,” a spokesperson for the group was quoted as saying. There was “no agreement” between Polidano Group and Enemalta for this to happen and it was the first time the group heard about it,” he added.
“We were surprised to have been involved in this and at a public meeting. We know nothing about this,” the spokesman added.
Until now, Polidano, with his self-styled ‘self-made man’ imgae, has shunned all media appearances and has only given one newspaper interview, way back in 2001.
