Council acts on Ibragg pedestrian hazard

The Swieqi council has finally asked for quotations for the development of a pedestrian crossing opposite the Halland Hotel, to eliminate a potential hazard for pedestrians passing from Ibragg road.
For the past years pedestrians have had to walk along the main road and the adjacent car park and bus stop, because the pavement is blocked by the protruding façade of a residence.
The council has now asked Transport Malta to identify the exact place for the pedestrian crossing.
Moreover, the Malta Environment and Planning Authority has issued an enforcement order against the front garden wall protruding in to the street but the enforcement is subject to a pending appeal.
The danger was exposed in a MaltaToday probe last year.
On 1 September 2009, the council had voted down the proposal, citing the high costs involved: “We are not saying we are not interested in the project, which will be done at a later stage. But at the moment we have to assess our financial position,” the Swieqi mayor told MaltaToday.
The mayor claimed that the installation of lights will cost the council a staggering €4,000. Residents speaking to this newspaper were furious at the council’s decision: “Is €4,000 too dear to protect pedestrians?” one resident asked.
