20% of Maltese prisoners hail from Grand Harbour towns
James Debono Statistics presented in parliament show that 74 out of the 356 Maltese inmates at the Corradino Correctional Facility hail from the Grand Harbour towns of Valletta, Marsa, Floriana, Bormla, Birgu, Isla, Kalkara and Xghajra.
Another 24% of CCF’s inmates hail from Africa.
On its own, Valletta accounts for 24 prisoners, surpassing Malta’s largest town – Birkirkara – which accounts for 21 prisoners.
Gozo, which accounts for 8% of the Maltese population, only accounts for 3% of Maltese inmates.
Foreigners currently account for nearly 40% of the total prison population of 590. Of these 143 hail from the African continent which accounts for 24% of the total prison population and 61% of the foreign inmate population.
Only 46 prisoners (7.8%) hailed from other EU countries.
The foreign population in prison remained at the same level of last year (40%) after increasing by 9% from 2008.
While a large number of cases involving foreigners are drug-related, a number of prisoners – especially those from sub-Saharan Africa – are serving six-month prison sentences after being caught residing illegally in Malta.
During the past year the total number of prisoners has increased by 18% from 499 to 590. The prison population had already increased from 414 in 2008 to 499 in 2009.
