Pullicino announces ‘concrete measures’ against climate change

Resources Minister George Pullicino yesterday unveiled a number of measures currently undertaken by his government as part of Malta’s ongoing commitment to address the problem of global warming.
Speaking on the Occasion of World Climate Awareness Day, Pullicino observed how over 100 schools had enrolled in the ‘Eco-School’ initiative: a forum aimed at preparing the upcoming generation for important environmental issues.
“The levels of preparedness I see among children and students is impressive, and exceeds even the level of readiness of certain areas of society and the country as a whole,” Pullicino said during a visit to the Our Lady Immaculate school in Hamrun yesterday. “We must work harder to meet the expectations of this attentive audience, which knows that the decisions we have to take today will translate into a better quality of environment for them to grow up and live in.”
The challenges of climate change are among the most urgent and important faced by the world today, and as such any measures to mitigate global warming have to be implemented within schedule. Pullicino indicated that the National Strategy for climate Change Mitigation Measures is now at an advanced stage, as is the Strategy for Adaptive Measures.
Among the measures currently in force is the closure of numerous uncontrolled rubbish dumps, as well as initiatives to recover and reutilise noxious gases released by the same. A large number of schemes are currently in place to encourage companies and individuals to invest in energy-generating appliances which make use of renewable sources of energy.
Studies are under way to establish wind-farms on land as well as at sea. There has also been considerable investment of local and EU funds in facilities to generate power from waste. Another measure alluded to by the Resources Minister was the ongoing reform in public transport, which will result in cleaner vehicles and less national reliance on private vehicles.
Above all, Pullicino urged a change in attitude among consumers, in order to help reach Malta’s targets on schedule.
