The General Workers’ Union headquarters – where a significant part of Malta’s tumultuous post-war history took place – could soon host a commercial cinema in its basement.
Secretary-General Tony Zarb confirmed that Workers’ Memorial Building’s basement, currently occupied by a disused printing press, has been leased through a management agreement to the prospective cinema operators.
The planning application to develop “a commercial cinema theatre and an adjoining souvenir shop” was presented by NNG Promotions’ director Nigel Camilleri.
The Workers’ Memorial Building already hosts a theatre with a seating capacity of more than 600, which in the past years has been used for concerts, drama, song festivals and various other cultural events. The headquarters are set on the ruins of the Auberge De France, which was completely demolished in World War II and has been the seat of the GWU since the mid-1960s.
