Borg ‘looks forward’ to Gaddafi visit

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tonio Borg yesterday met a Libyan delegation led by Libyan foreign secretary Suleiman Shoumi, at the foreign affairs ministry.
Borg said Malta’s President George Abela would be visiting the country for the 40th anniversary of the Libyan people’s revolution and that he also looked forward to the Libyan leader’s visit to Malta.
Borg said yesterday that progress had been registered between the two countries on a double taxation agreement, and that political and technical discussions were ongoing on issues concerning visas, fisheries and illegal immigration.
Borg said the number of asylum seekers arriving into Malta had firmly decreased, compared to previous years, also thanks to cooperation from Libya.
Borg said that despite this improvement, illegal immigration still needed to be addressed.
During the meeting with Borg, Shoumi said Libya “understood” that immigration posed difficulties for Malta.
