Desmond Vella, one of Malta’s major promoters and pioneer in the dance music scene, yesterday passed away at the age of 34.
The successful businessman was the director of the seminal Tribu Festival, the annual dance party, and later opened a string of clothes shop, amongst them Exit, Miss Sixty and Shu. He was also a director of the Valletta wine bar 222.
Vella was on holiday with his family in Cyprus this week when reports of his death started flowing in. A blood clot was reportedly the cause of his death when yesterday morning he was reported to being in a critical condition and dependent on a life support machine.
Vella was due to celebrate his birthday tomorrow.
The young businessman started early in the retail sector. At the age of 20 he opened Exit at the Savoy Arcades in Valletta, as a shop-in-shop concept for music and fashion. His strategy for the Exit brand was the successful Tribu festival, attracting crowds of up to 8,000. Vella then brought the Miss Sixty brand to Malta, expanding the franchise store from Valletta to Gozo, Paola, and in Sliema.
