Sliema council in stand against yacht marina

The Sliema local council expressed its concern on government’s proposal to develop an all weather 496-berth yacht marina in the Sliema creek, between Sliema and Manoel Island. In a letter sent to the Malta Maritime Authority, the local council claimed the parking problem in the Strand will be aggravated by the proposed yacht marina.
The MMA study proposes land reclamation costing €5 million to create 86 new parking spaces on the Strand, but the study acknowledged this will not be sufficient for the increased demand for parking. The council is also calling for an environment impact assessment (EIA) to be able to view the effects of the marina holistically.
The council expressed its concern that the development would deter swimmers from bathing in this area. Labour, Nationalist and AD councillors attending a recent council meeting were unanimous in expressing their reservations on the marina.
