The special relationship

In the 1970s, Malta forged strong links with Colonel Gaddafi’s Great People’s Libyan Arab Socialist Jamahiriya, amid fears of a possible alliance with what was then perceived as a potentially dangerous rogue state. Today Malta is in the European Union, and oil-rich Libya has been accepted back into the international fold after renouncing its weapons programme and cutting links with terrorism. But as Libya opens up to the West, can Malta still rely on a 40-year ‘blood brotherhood’ to make the most of the new opportunities?
