Labour MEP candidate Sharon Ellul Bonici has sued PN candidate Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas for libel.
According to Ellul Bonici, Triccas said the Labour candidate had “declared herself in favour of the introduction of abortion” on a feature on Net Television on 2 April.
Ellul Bonici said that Triccas was being deceptive by attributing such a statement to her.
The allegation concerns a comment Ellul Bonici made on a Facebook group in September 2008 concerning the campaign by Gift Of Life to entrench the crime of abortion in the Maltese Constitution.
Ellul Bonici told MaltaToday two weeks ago that the Lisbon Treaty would be give the European Court of Justice the power of judgement over rights falling under the European Convention of Human Rights, which will be fully transposed by the Treaty.
Ellul Bonici claims the Treaty will give the Court the power to grant abortion to European citizens as a right, which will make any Constitutional amendment useless.
Ellul Bonici said the reason that Malta was not passing through a tragedy with illegal abortions was due to the fact that many Maltese women travelled abroad to terminate their pregnancies.
Answering to accusations that she had worked against the Lisbon Treaty – which also carries with it the sixth MEP seat for Malta – Ellul Bonici said Triccas knows the sixth seat does not depend on the ratification of the Treaty.
“The Severin-Lamassoure report only requires ratification by the Council of member states for the introduction of the sixth seat,” the Labour candidate said.
