State funding of the political parties

With reference to a story appearing in the Sunday Times on party funding, this account dealt with the MLP’s proposal (behind closed doors) to the parliamentary select committee wherein this party is now expecting that the state donates at least €3 million over a five-year period to the MLP so that it would be able to fund research and consultation.
In this sense, Joseph Muscat’s public statements during the party AGM on Sunday, 1 February, that as a politician he is all in favour of state money being used to finance political parties, are both unfair and unjust since should the proposal be accepted and eventually implemented, Maltese and Gozitan taxpayers would end up subsidising political parties they do not support.
