Motorists and importers are bringing vehicles from the UK into Malta in droves, as the reformed car registration scheme has been followed by a 91% increase in UK car imports in December alone.
Car imports from the UK appeared to be flatlining at just 196 in June 2008 and then rose to 275 in November, but exploded to 526 in December.
Car imports in January 2009 were still perky with 420 vehicles, and again shooting up to 550 in February.
The increase comes in the wake of the removal of the old registration tax that charged up to 65% of the total car value, according to its engine size.
Instead it was replaced with a tax calculated according to the length of the car and its carbon dioxide emissions, leading to a hefty cut in registration tax.
The annual road licence was also changed to an annual circulation tax that will be based on the car’s emissions and age.
