The Labour party yesterday said the Broadcasting Authority had accepted “in principle” a proposal to hold a national conference on ethics in audiovisual journalism.
Secretary-general Jason Micallef and Labour MP Evarist Bartolo met BA chairman Joe Scicluna to discuss the proposal that was first presented to the Authority in December.
The two party officials also said they discussed the role of the PBS newsroom with Scicluna.
Micallef said the PL was not happy with the way the newsroom was being managed, citing cases of imbalance in its news bulletin over the past two days.
Micallef said the responsibility of the head of news was towards the general public and the public service, and not towards an association or a political party.
Evarist Bartolo added that the PL would not accept any partisan manipulation during news programmes, saying the PBS newsroom should not be a “fine and sophisticated version” of Net TV.
