Anna Mallia’s scaremongering rhetoric

I usually find the contributions of Dr Anna Mallia to be very sensible, constructive and well-written.
It is therefore all the more disappointing to say the least to learn from her opinion article (‘No National Security’, MaltaToday Midweek, 4 February 2009) that she does not shy away from joining in the ultra-conservative sentiment, that seems to have become fashionable in Malta to say that the Maltese are “living on a time-bomb, expecting from one day to the other to be outnumbered by these illegal immigrants”.
Could she, who usually underpins her contributions with such sound and well-founded arguments, please explain on what evidence she bases her choice of words in the phrases “time-bomb”, “from one day to the other”, “be outnumbered”?
And why should persons that MaltaToday – one of the few consistently non-racist papers in Malta – usually and fairly refers to as “migrants”, all of a sudden in her article in this very paper be called “these illegal immigrants”?
How very odd. And shocking.

I have only one simple question to make to Dr Anna Mallia with regards to her recent article about what she describes as defenceless Malta, illegal migrants allegedly running all over the country, and what she implies as being an either inefficient or illequiped AFM, or both. Have you, dear Dr Mallia, ever bothered to engage the CAFM, or at least the AFM’s Media and Public Relations Office, in a clear enquiring session about the facts before writing that sort of diatribe? Hers is yet another of the many ill-informed and totally insulting and unappreciative articles and comments which we so often see being bandied about in our national media about our hard working Armed Forces, every single man-jack of them from the Commander right down to the latest recruit.
