Malta’s bad roads highlighted in US crime and safety report

Maltese roads are so bad, even the Americans know it.
A crime and safety report issued by the US Overseas Security Advisory Council on 23 January has warned travellers that Maltese roads are poorly maintained and low lying flood areas are practically impassable.
The report goes on to say that driving in Malta “presents challenges” as a number of roads are poorly maintained. Additionally, roads are deemed to be extremely narrow and not clearly delineated with street signs. “During heavy rain, roads in low-lying flood areas may be impassable.”
It also warns pedestrians to take precautions, as sidewalks may be absent or narrow.
The report also says transportation by taxi is expensive and travellers should negotiate fare prices before entering any vehicle.
And bus drivers’ reputations really precede them. “Buses are inexpensive, but bus drivers can be unprofessional, aggressive, and sometimes less willing to show patience with foreigners.”
In last year’s report bus drivers were described as “impatient and aggressive by US standards.”
The report refers to Paceville as the scene of excessive alcohol consumption and warns that the security personnel of some establishments are known to use heavy-handed tactics.
Club visitors are advised to avoid confrontation with bouncers and local youths, and should depart at the first sign of potential problems.
Illegal drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin are considered to be accessible, particularly in those areas frequented by tourists. In last year’s report, drugs are only deemed available to well-connected local and foreign residents, but less available to tourists. The report warns that persons caught trafficking narcotics can expect severe penalties.
