Sense Group makes appeal for ‘responsible’ drinking
The lobby for the alcoholic beverage importers and producers, the Sense Group, yesterday issued a strong appeal for everybody to celebrate the Christmas season by drinking responsibly.
TSG said that the festive season was a time to celebrate with friends and family, and that drinking alcoholic beverages is a part of such activities. TSG members are once again pledging not to sponsor open bar parties, and urged the public to refrain from drinking and driving.
Joe Farrugia, Chief Executive of the Sense Group said that today there are a number of options one can resort to avoid drinking and driving. Taxis are more accessible, groups can pool resources to hire minivans, and there is also an increased acceptance of the designated driver concept. “It really doesn’t take much to make Christmas a safe and enjoyable experience for everybody,” Farrugia said.
The Sense Group, which represents producers and importers of alcoholic beverages in Malta, also expressed support for the campaign being organised by Sedqa, the Health Authorities, the Civil Protection Department and the Police Department to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.
Farrugia said the industry has for years been promoting the moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages, and for drinkers to abstain from driving. The convergence of views between public authorities and the industry will serve to make the collective message more effective and to minimise alcohol related harm.
