Malta and Eritrea established diplomatic relations last Thursday, during a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York.
The protocol was signed by Saviour F. Borg, Malta’s ambassador to the UN, and by Araya Desta, Ambassador of Eritrea to the UN. The two ambassadors exchanged views about the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Mediterranean. As maritime states, ambassadors Borg and Desta highlighted the importance which their governments gave to the sea in contributing towards the strengthening of their countries’ economies, as well as in their development efforts.
Borg referred in particular to the problems being faced by Malta in coping with the increased influx of irregular migrants and the efforts being undertaken to secure the involvement and support of its neighbours in dealing with this phenomenon.
On his part, Ambassador Desta said he understood the difficulties being faced by Malta in tackling illegal migration and agreed that all countries concerned should support each other in this regard.
He also referred to the importance of combating human trafficking which in many instances contributed to illegal migration.
